Global Surgery Initiatives

Meet Dr Wanangwa Chisenga

Wherever we work in resource poor healthcare settings a priority remains to focus on education initiatives in an attempt to leave behind expertise on the ground. The work needs to continue and the patients needs to be cared for whether or not I or my colleagues are on the ground. In Malawi we have had modest success in teaching some basic urological procedures to clinical officers. Ultimately though we need to have locally trained urologic surgeons work in Zomba to continue the care day to day. The College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) provides an opportunity. I have written about COSECSA in previous blogs. Dr Chisenga is the first to benefit from the fund we have established at the University of Toronto as we invest in specialty surgical training. I am very excited to see him graduate at the end of 2019 and come back to build on what we have started in Zomba, Malawi. Please view this video to see what the support means to Dr Chisenga.
